With the increased focus on psychosocial factors, RTW coordinators will now benefit from additional competencies in this area.
These psychosocial competencies enable them to take a holistic approach to injury management by addressing both physical and non-physical barriers to recovery and RTW:
•A thorough understanding of the biopsychosocial model and how it applies to injury management.
•An ability to identify and work with psychosocial barriers to recovery and RTW.
•Familiarity with psychosocial screening tools and how to interpret them.
•Skills in discussing psychosocial barriers sensitively with workers.
•Knowledge of various psychosocial interventions and their appropriate application.
By developing these operational, strategic and psychosocial competencies, RTW coordinators can significantly enhance the effectiveness of RTW programs. Whether they are directly managing cases or focusing on system-level improvements, these skills allow them to support better outcomes for both injured workers and organisations.
