Training for psychologists and psychosocial counsellors

Psychologists and those undertaking psychosocial counselling provide early, structured support to workers experiencing psychosocial barriers to recovery. Unlike traditional mental health counselling, the focus is on identifying and addressing psychosocial factors that impact work capacity within a structured, short-term intervention model.

Training for psychologists and counsellors should ensure they can:

Understand the psychosocial matched care framework and their role within it

Conduct structured assessments of psychosocial barriers to recovery

Deliver evidence-based, short-term interventions aligned with RTW goals

Work collaboratively with case managers, RTW coordinators, and treating doctors

Communicate effectively with insurers and workplace stakeholders to support recovery
