prod_tip Managing work attendance for people with health conditions, sometimes called case management,

is challenging but it is also rewarding.

Case management for a work injury can be performed by:

the supervisor or line manager

a RTW coordinator

an external rehabilitation professional

a treating doctor

the human resources manager.

In many organisations, RTW coordinators actively assist employees after an injury, communicating with them and coordinating the RTW process. Or the RTW coordinator may train and support other staff who undertake day-to-day coordination of RTW.

In larger organisations the RTW coordinator may spend much of their time training and supporting supervisors to manage return to work, limiting their direct case management activities to complex cases.

Regardless of who takes on the case management role they must have the necessary skills, training and support to effectively manage the RTW process.
