Work demands, work ability and MSDs

Work that places strain on the lower back reduces work ability more than other types of physical demands; and multiple physical demands cause problems too.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a common cause of reduced work ability. Lower work ability is linked to increased sickness absence, reduced productivity and leaving work altogether. Many workers with MSDs do continue working productively.
