There is increasing recognition of the importance of psychological factors in how we recover from musculoskeletal injuries. One of those factors is believing we’ll get better.

Models of persistent pain and disability say that what we think and believe about pain is important. If we catastrophise about our pain — if we think it’s really bad and will never go away — this can lead to a fear of movement, depression and ultimately more pain.
