Healthcare providers are integral to RTW outcomes. Their clinical decisions, treatment recommendations and capacity assessments directly impact how quickly and successfully workers return to their roles. However, many providers face significant challenges managing work injuries, including time pressures, limited training in workers' compensation and difficulties balancing clinical care with workplace requirements.
The challenge often lies in conflicting priorities and communication gaps. Healthcare providers focus primarily on clinical recovery, while employers need practical guidance about work capacity and suitable duties. Workers may receive mixed messages about returning to work, leading to confusion and delayed recovery.
Successful RTW requires genuine partnerships with healthcare providers built on clear communication, transparency and collaborative approaches. When these partnerships work well, they create smoother pathways for workers and better outcomes for those involved.
