There is significant variation in the quality of healthcare providers managing work injuries. Some excel at treating clinical conditions but struggle with the practical aspects of work capacity evaluation. Others may lack understanding of workplace demands or hold outdated beliefs about the benefits of prolonged rest following injury.
The quality of healthcare providers can make or break RTW outcomes. Providers who understand the importance of early, active intervention and maintain good communication with all stakeholders can accelerate recovery and prevent unnecessary disability. Conversely, providers who take passive approaches or fail to consider work capacity can inadvertently prolong absence and increase costs.
The key is identifying providers who follow evidence-based practices, communicate effectively and understand that functional recovery is the goal. For example, healthcare providers who conduct workplace visits gain firsthand insight into job demands and available accommodations, enabling them to make more informed decisions about work capacity and provide more targeted RTW recommendations.
